Post-Apocalyptic Audience Research (IMDb)

The audience demographic of post-apocalyptic films tend to be everyone, from my research. I've looked into many films through IMDb and found that the ratings from each age group tend to be very similar. The amount of votes push much more towards a male audience, but that may be due to IMDb being more popular with males than females. However, even with this information in mind, the male audience vastly outweighs the female audience.

Here are the user ratings for 'I Am Legend'. As said above, the male audience vastly outweighs the female audience, with six times the amount of male votes to female votes. We can also gather that the main audience, by far, is between the age range of 18-29, as that makes up for approximately half of the total viewing figures on IMDb.

Another example is '28 Days Later', where, again, the male audience is six times the female audience. Even for IMDb, that is a huge jump. Again, the 18-29 age range is dominant with 2/5 of the viewing figures. A trend seems to be gathering within the demographics of the genre.

Females have jumped up a bit with 'The Walking Dead', making up a quarter of the total audience. But age range of 18-29 is still hugely dominant, making up half of the ratings. The figures aged under 18 also make up the minority, but that's probably due to the lack of use of IMDb. same with other audiences, except they probably do use it more often than those under 18.

For 'Zombieland', there are five times the amount of males to females and, again, half of the audience are between the age range of 18-29. There's a huge trend here and I don't believe that I need to research into too many pieces of media of the post-apocalyptic genre.

Finally, there are eight times the amount of males voting to females in 'The Book of Eli' and 18-29 make up half of the audience yet again. I believe that this will be enough gathered. A similar trend is found throughout my research. I may look at more in the future if I see fit.

From the evidence gathered, males seem to prefer the post-apocalyptic genre to females and the 18-29 range is dominant throughout. IMDb isn't the most reliable way of getting audience demographics, as the voters will lean more towards males and young adults than any other age. The site attracts those audiences, as oppose to late adults and people under the age of 18. However, the ratings to vastly point to those audiences, telling me that this is who the post-apocalyptic genre generally appeals to.

I will ask people around the local area and those I know of different age groups their thoughts on the post-apocalyptic genre for a wider range of research.
